About St Michael’s House Foundation
St. Michael’s House (SMH) was established to provide social care support and services, with a particular emphasis on catering to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Founded on the principle of enabling service users to lead independent lives within their communities, SMH has grown to become a cornerstone of support for men, women, and children with disabilities and their families across the greater Dublin area. With an extensive network spanning 170 locations, SMH directly supports approximately 2,300 individuals.
Inclusive Aquatic Experience
SMH believe inclusivity is crucial when it comes to their swimming pool facility. SMH aims to ensure that individuals of all abilities can enjoy the physical, social, and therapeutic benefits of aquatic activities.
By providing these facilities and equipment, SMH aims to create a sense of belonging and empowerment, promoting physical wellbeing, social interaction, and personal development, regardless of abilities. Through a referral system, individuals are prioritised for swimming based on clinical needs, ensuring access for those unable to use community pools.
Shower Trolleys
SMH is dedicated to promoting inclusivity for individuals with disabilities through the use of accessibility equipment like shower trolleys. The shower trolleys make a difference in transporting service users to and from the swimming pool while maintaining their dignity. These trolleys are height-adjustable, allowing a comfortable working posture for the carer and ensuring comfort for the service user.
This initiative aims to foster inclusivity by removing barriers and creating opportunities for everyone to participate in the joy of swimming. By investing in these shower trolleys, SMH is taking a significant step towards creating a truly inclusive aquatic environment where everyone feels welcomed and supported.
The Grant
The Hospital Saturday Fund presented a grant of €12,750 to St Michael’s Foundation. The grant will go towards a bariatric Carevo shower trolley for safe and comfortable transfers into the swimming pool for those with disabilities.
