About Air Ambulance Northern Ireland
Air Ambulance Northern Ireland (Air Ambulance NI) is a charity dedicated to providing emergency medical services across Northern Ireland. In partnership with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS), it operates the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), delivering critical pre-hospital care to those in need.
Operations and Coverage
Air Ambulance Northern Ireland’s operational helicopter carries a crew consisting of a pilot, doctor, and paramedic. It operates 365 days a year, providing emergency response from 07:00 to 19:00 daily. The service covers all of Northern Ireland and can also respond to incidents in the Republic of Ireland when requested. Air Ambulance NI has two helicopters one for primary operations and a backup aircraft along with road vehicles that assist in local incidents or serve as an alternative when weather conditions prevent the helicopter from flying.

Partnership in Emergency Care
Air Ambulance NI has a unique partnership with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) to deliver the region’s Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS). Under a Memorandum of Understanding, NIAS provides a dedicated team of 15 doctors and 7 paramedics who are specially trained in pre-hospital emergency medicine. These experts fly on board seven days a week, delivering advanced clinical interventions, specialist treatments, and critical care directly at the scene of an incident, stabilising patients before transport to the most appropriate hospital.
The Grant
The Hospital Saturday Fund awarded a grant of £10,000 to the Air Ambulance Northern Ireland. The grant will go towards purchasing a weather station in Enniskillen. This new system will significantly enhance the helicopter’s operational efficiency by providing accurate, real-time weather data. By having its dedicated weather station, Air Ambulance Northern Ireland can improve the accuracy of flight planning, ensuring a safer and more reliable service for patients in need.
