About Chronic Pain Ireland
Chronic pain is a complex condition that profoundly impacts quality of life. As the population ages, an estimated one-third of the Irish population experiences chronic pain, with numbers continuing to rise. Historically, limited access to hospital-run management programmes and an insufficient understanding within the healthcare system has led to delayed diagnoses and prolonged suffering.
Founded in 1992, Chronic Pain Ireland (CPI), originally known as the Irish Chronic Pain Association, was established to advocate for better support, awareness, and resources for those living with chronic pain.
Support for Chronic Pain
CPI is committed to raising awareness of chronic pain, educating individuals on managing the condition, and advocating for improved support and treatment options. Their efforts include promoting multi-disciplinary treatment centres, enhancing healthcare services, and pushing for changes in the educational curriculum to better inform healthcare providers about the challenges of diagnosing, treating, and managing chronic pain.
CPI also offers accessible, community-based solutions, such as workshops, a five-week self-management course, and booster sessions, in partnership with the Pain Association of Scotland.

Cathal Nolan, GMC Member, The Hospital Saturday Fund, presented a €13,500 grant to Christina Donnelly, Executive Director, Chronic Pain Ireland. The grant will go towards funding their self-management courses and workshops for chronic pain.
Enhancing Life Quality
CPI envisions a society where individuals with chronic pain are supported and empowered to lead fulfilling lives. Their mission is to increase awareness, educate both the public and healthcare providers, and offer practical self-management tools. The organisation advocates for improved healthcare services, greater access to treatment centres, and community-based initiatives that help individuals manage their pain. Their strategic goals focus on increasing understanding, building partnerships, and improving the quality of life for those affected.
The Grant
The Hospital Saturday Fund has awarded a grant of €13,500 to Chronic Pain Ireland. This funding will support the delivery of self-management courses and workshops, aimed at providing practical tools and strategies for individuals living with chronic pain.
