About Fight Against Blindness
Fight Against Blindness provides a specialist clinical psychology service for children and young people with sight loss and visual impairment to help manage their mental health and eye conditions in everyday life.
FAB’s professional clinical psychologists work one-on-one with children, young people, parents and carers who have been referred by participating hospital eye clinics. The specialist sight loss and visual impairment clinical psychology service for children and young people offered by FAB stands as a unique initiative in the UK.
Since 2011, FAB’s services have addressed the needs of over 3,000 children, along with their siblings, parents, and families. Despite the high demand from hospitals for this service, it has yet to be commissioned by the NHS.
“The service has touched the lives of many families, who regularly tell us what a difference it made for them both in the early stages of receiving the diagnosis and adapting the support to the child’s changing circumstances as they mature, change schools, peer groups and develop their ambitions for the future.” – Louise Allen, Senior Consultant at Addenbrooke’s
Vision for All: Advancing Accessibility in Eye Healthcare
In August 2023, FAB integrated its services with Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) for patients. FAB’s psychologists work within the eye clinics of partner hospitals and work closely with consultants.
Besides GOSH, FAB’s psychologists are also active in Addenbrooke’s Cambridge, Oxford Children’s Hospital, Bristol Royal Children’s Hospital, and Southampton General.
The Grant
The Hospital Saturday Fund has awarded a £7,500 Grant to the Fight Against Blindness charity. This funding will support FAB’s specialist sight loss and visual impairment clinical psychology service for children and young people.
Additionally, it will aid FAB in extending its transformative services to The Royal Victoria Hospital, enhancing accessibility to its services in Belfast.
