About Aoibheann’s Pink Tie
Aoibheann’s Pink Tie National Children’s Cancer Charity was established in 2010 by Mick Rochford and Jimmy Norman following the passing of Jimmy’s daughter, Aoibheann, who lost her battle with a rare cancer at just eight years old. Inspired by the support they received from friends and family, the charity was named in her memory. Initially raising funds for individual families, Mick and Jimmy’s efforts have grown significantly, transforming Aoibheann’s Pink Tie into a leading charity that supports thousands of families facing childhood cancer each year.
Empowering Families
Aoibheann’s Pink Tie provides practical, emotional, and financial support to families of children with cancer. Their services include emergency financial assistance, respite days, and various care packages tailored to individual needs. They also organise themed events for children, ensuring moments of joy amidst treatment. Families are primarily referred to the charity by social workers from oncology wards, particularly St. John’s Ward at Our Lady’s Hospital in Crumlin.
Innovative Resources
Various tools to support families and children undergoing cancer treatment. Emergency packs, stocked with toiletries and spare pyjamas, are readily available on the oncology ward in Crumlin for patients in need. Chemo ducks serve as both educational resources and emotional support; each plush toy is designed with features like a Hickman line, bandana, and mask to help children understand chemotherapy and its side effects, accompanied by informative books. Additionally, made-to-measure dry suits allow children to swim or shower without the risk of wetting their Hickman lines, enhancing their overall well-being and comfort.
The Grant
The Hospital Saturday Fund awarded a grant of €13,500 to Aoibheann’s Pink Tie, which will support the creation of Comfort Care Bundles. These bundles are designed to provide essential practical items to families facing childhood cancer, alleviating some of the burdens during an incredibly challenging time. The funding will enable Aoibheann’s Pink Tie to enhance its offerings, ensuring that families have access to the resources they need to navigate their journey with greater comfort and support.
