Background
Wales Air Ambulance have been delivering lifesaving advanced medical care to people across Wales. Since 2001, with helicopter emergency medical services and rapid response vehicles, they’ve responded to over 45,000 missions across Cardiff, Llanelli, Welshpool & Caernarvon.
Rapid response: whenever, wherever it’s needed
In 2022 the Wales Air Ambulance crews carried out 3368 missions. That’s almost 10 a day. The hard-working crew continue to provide life-saving medical care across the principality, maintaining the high level of missions that are demanded.
Together, they’ve helped thousands. Alan, for example, had his life saved by Wales Air Ambulance following a cardiac arrest playing walking football at Caldicot Leisure Centre. Two helicopters arrived on the scene and within 20 minutes, the A&E unit was performing life-saving surgery. Only 1 in 10 survive such an incident, but after writing a book about his experience, he now volunteers by giving talks at legacy events and undertakes regular fundraising initiatives.
Helmets to keep the team safe
To continue their extraordinary life saving work, the Welsh Air Ambulance need to raise a substantial amount of funds to maintain operations. That includes equipping the team with the most up-to-date equipment.
Search and Rescue Alpha 900 Helmets are essential equipment for each member of the crew when it comes to safety and ability to carry out missions quickly and effectively. The helmets protect the head, enable communication within the team and with patients and provide night vision for rescue missions. Each helmet is individually customised and costs £2,402 each.
The grant
Recognising the outstanding commitment and passion from all team members and the incredible work they do as a charity, The Hospital Saturday Fund presented a £9,610 grant in July 2023 towards the search and rescue Alpha 900 helmets.
