Founded in 1920, Swansea University is a leading research institution with a vibrant global community. They excel at striking a balance between exceptional teaching and cutting-edge research, all while creating a spirit of exploration and discovery.
Swansea University’s dedication to research with real-world impact is evident: 86% of their research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021). This dedication is reflected in their top ranking within Wales in The Guardian University Guide 2023 and their impressive 26th position overall. Additionally, Swansea University boasts 15th place in the UK for Course Satisfaction, highlighting its commitment to a positive student experience.
Boosting Medical Education
Swansea University’s Graduate Entry Medicine programme has over 450 students, with exciting times ahead for the 104 final-year students graduating in 2024. These students have the unique opportunity to pursue elective placements abroad, with roughly two-thirds of past graduates choosing this enriching path.
By participating in international electives, students gain invaluable exposure to diverse healthcare systems and broaden their perspectives. These experiences can greatly benefit them in both their personal and professional capacities, shaping them into versatile and well-rounded doctors.
Global Health Focus
Financial barriers can stop students from taking part in life-changing medical electives abroad. These programmes offer invaluable exposure to diverse medical specialities and global healthcare perspectives, shaping future doctors, who are well-equipped for the complexities of postgraduate training. The benefits extend beyond the individual student, as healthcare institutions gain a workforce enhanced by experienced and adaptable medical professionals with a broader global perspective.
The Grant
The Hospital Saturday Fund presented a grant of £10,000 to Swansea University. The grant will cover costs to make the electives programme more equitable for all students, regardless of their financial position. These electives allow students to gain invaluable experience before beginning their careers after graduation.
