About St Clare Hospice
St Clare Hospice was formed in 1990 and is an integral component of healthcare provision across West Essex and East Herts. All services are provided free of charge. St Clare Hospice contributes to palliative care education locally, nationally and internationally.
The partnerships with other health and social care providers help the hospice to reach more people with their specialist palliative services, preventing unnecessary hospital admissions and sharing best practices in end-of-life care.
The Sanctuary
Patients under the care of St Clare Hospice can access the on-site Sanctuary and gardens. This serene place offers restoration and reflection providing comfort and peace for patients.
The Sanctuary is a peaceful retreat for people of all faiths, as well as those with no faith, offering a space for spiritual reflection or quiet contemplation. It also houses St Clare Hospice’s remembrance tree, where visitors can write thoughts, memories, dedications, or special sentiments to hang on its branches in memory of a loved one.
Embrace Beds
St Clare Hospice has been looking at enhancing the patient experience with an ‘Embrace Bed’. This bariatric bed can be used for bariatric patients and patients who require a standard-sized bed but would like to cuddle and sleep alongside a loved one.
The ‘Embrace’ Bed can be adjusted to be wider when accommodating two people and then reduced in width when caring for a single patient. This makes it safer and easier for nurses to provide personal care and move the patient.
“Being able to lie close to my Dad in his final days meant that we could properly talk, share memories from my childhood, and I could read to him while he dozed. I have no doubt it helped ease Dad’s pain, and for me, it means my last memories with him in those final precious days are less painful. He loved it when the grandchildren came to visit because they could cuddle up as well.” – St Clare Hospice Patient
The Grant
The Hospital Saturday Fund presented a grant of £2,000 to St Clare Hospice. The grant will be used towards a Specialist Hospice Companion or ‘Embrace’ Bed, which aims to improve the comfort and support for patients at St Clare Hospice during their stay.
