Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People provides specialist respite, palliative and end of life care to children and young people with life limiting or life-threatening conditions and support to their families and friends. This year Rainbows Hospice marks 25 years of care.
In November 2018, the Hospital Saturday Fund donated £2,000 towards Practice Development Nurses for the organisation. We recently received this update from Anne-Marie one of their Lead Nurses:
Thank you for providing funding towards Practice Development Nurses (PDNs) at Rainbows and helping them to provide complex care to the children and young people who rely on the Hospice.
Because of the grant, these nurses have been able to add to their skills through formal and informal development opportunities both clinically and around best practice standards. This has led to improved outcomes and quality of care for children and young people.
The team of PDNs have written, planned and launched the Rainbows Preceptorship Programme, supporting newly qualified nurses and staff members who are new to palliative care. This programme has helped to educate in-depth on areas including medicine management and safe practices, while upskilling Hospice Care Assistants in specialist areas like working with ventilated children.
All of the care and support provided by PDNs has a direct impact on the care Rainbows gives to life-limited children and young people. Thank you for supporting them in this endeavour.
