About MS North West Therapy Centre
The MS North West Therapy Centre Sligo was established in July 1993 by Padraic Kilcullen, who was himself a sufferer of Multiple Sclerosis. He was tired of the journey to Trim for treatment and wanted to create a facility closer to home.
Despite Kilcullen’s passing in March 1995, his legacy lives on through the therapy centre, which continues to offer vital services to individuals with MS, encompassing physiotherapy, reflexology, oxygen therapy, and peer support.
Healing through Oxygen: HBOT Treatment
Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment (HBOT) involves breathing pure oxygen at higher than atmospheric pressures in an enclosed chamber. This increased flow of oxygen stimulates and assists in repairing damaged cells throughout the body.
Research has shown that HBOT can offer great benefits to people with MS, including improved balance, sight, bladder control, and overall well-being. It is also found to be useful in healing soft tissue injuries, sprains and bruising, leg ulcers, and circulatory problems.
Revitalising Health: The €13,000 Grant
The Hospital Saturday Fund awarded a grant of €13,000 to the MS North West Therapy Centre. This Grant will go towards the reopening of the Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber. MS North West Therapy Centre aims to have the HBOT in service by mid-2024. Before the pandemic, the chamber was in regular use with approximately nine dives over a week servicing over 300 patients annually.
