Visit to Look Good Feel Better
Along with Margaret Rogers, one of The Hospital Saturday Funds’ trustees, I visited Look Good Feel Better in Dublin on 26th July 2019. I was delighted to present a cheque for €8,000 to Annabel O’Keeffe. Annabel is the General Manager of Look Good Feel Better and this sum will go towards funding the expansion of their workshops. While there, we also met board members’ Gillian Nealon (pictured) and Noel Hitchcock.
History
Look Good Feel Better was launched in Ireland in 2003 as a programme managed by the Irish Cancer Society and in 2013 was re-established by the Irish Cosmetic & Detergent Association (ICDA) as a registered charity.
How Look Good Feel Better helps
Annabel explained to us that finding out you have cancer can be daunting and life-changing. The added stress of the appearance-related side effects of treatment can be demoralising and very hard to cope with. This can have a serious effect on self-esteem and confidence, at a time when a positive attitude is very important.
Look Good Feel Better uses the power of make-up to help rebuild self-confidence and self-esteem for women who have gone through cancer treatment. The Charity’s workshops have become an integral part of the patient’s treatment.
The workshops
The new programme of workshops would involve people attending out-patient cancer centres. The attendees are chosen for the Look Good Feel Better workshops by oncologists, with the help of the Irish Cancer Society.
Look Good Feel Better wants to start the first out-patient workshop in Cork during October as this City has the highest incidence of cancer in Ireland.

The Look Good Feel Better programme is currently operating in the following hospitals: Beaumont Hospital, The Mater Hospital, St. James’s Hospital, St. Lukes Hospital, Tallaght Hospital, Cork University Hospital, Letterkenny General Hospital, Limerick University Hospital, Galway University Hospital, Waterford University Hospital, Sligo University Hospital and Kerry University Hospital.
Last year, Look Good Feel Better held 114 beauty workshops in 15 hospitals and the Charity supported 1,032 women going through cancer treatment.
We were delighted to be able to help Look Good Feel Better with their workshops and look forward to hearing more about this important and supportive organisation.
