About Croí
Established in 1985 Croi Heart and Stroke Centre is the first of its kind in Ireland, located in Galway and adjacent to Galway University and The National University of Ireland Galway. They are dedicated to the prevention and recovery from cardiovascular disease and strokes. With the help of the local air ambulance, they can be reached within 20 minutes, depending on the location of the patient.
Croi’s Health Check Events
Croí aims to raise awareness and provide vital free assessments for the early detection of stroke and cardiac risks through its Heart and Stroke Mobile Health Unit. The organisation plans to hold 10 health check events, with the goal of completing five by the end of this year, contingent on the success of this application.
These events will be managed by Croi’s community health team, which includes cardiovascular nurse specialists, dietitians, and health psychologists, supported by administrative staff. The events will take place in rural areas of Galway and surrounding regions.
Supporting Rural Health
Croí aims to extend its reach to rural towns and local communities that lack easy access to healthcare services. The organisation will announce its visits through various community channels, including local parish newsletters, local government and council communications, radio interviews with the team, social media platforms, and local newspapers.
In addition, Croí benefits from the support of numerous volunteer nurses who dedicate their free time to assist the charity as needed. The organisation also offers a wide array of online resources, including helplines, Croí connects virtual chats, informative videos, and additional support for patients and their families.
The Grant
The Hospital Saturday Fund has awarded a grant of €13,500 to Croí to support its vital work in improving public health. This funding will be used to raise awareness and provide free assessments for the early detection of stroke and cardiac risks through Croí’s Heart and Stroke Mobile Health Unit.
