About ARC
ARC is a registered, independent Irish charity founded in 1994. It was the brainchild of Professor Des Carney, a leading oncologist in the Mater Hospital, who identified a gap in cancer service provision for patients and their loved ones. He recognised a need for complementary, holistic, and psychological support during and after hospital treatment, working in tandem with patients’ medical care. A small group of caring and committed volunteers worked tirelessly to open the first ARC Cancer Support Centre near the Mater Hospital in Dublin.
Dublin’s Cancer Care
ARC offers acupuncture therapy to adults undergoing cancer treatment and their families, providing relief from side effects and reducing stress. With three centres in Dublin, ARC serves over 400 individuals annually and complements this service with a range of holistic offerings, including children’s therapy, counselling, reflexology, and peer support groups. Recognising that cancer affects 1 in 2 people, ARC is dedicated to inclusivity, by providing all services free of charge, without questions about background or circumstances, ensuring that anyone in need can access the care and support they require.

Acupuncture for Cancer
ARC employs six acupuncture practitioners who specialise in cancer care. These professionals also mentor trainee acupuncturists through shadowing, training, and peer support. Acupuncture helps alleviate common chemotherapy side effects, including fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, dry mouth, and pain. Beyond addressing physical effects, cancer patients and their families often face emotional and psychological challenges. ARC extends its services to both patients and their caregivers, offering crucial support during these difficult times.
The Grant
The Hospital Saturday Fund awarded a grant of €13,500 to ARC Cancer Support Centres. This funding will enable this highly sought-after service to deliver 1,600 acupuncture sessions to 280 individuals undergoing cancer treatment, as well as 120 of their family members. These sessions aim to alleviate treatment side effects and reduce stress, with measurable outcomes including improved sleep, reduced pain, and decreased stress levels by the end of 2025.
