About us
For more than 50 years, the Asthma Society of Ireland has been unyielding in its mission to prevent asthma-related suffering and death. Their work touches the lives of one in 13 individuals, and the society aims to transform them through education and support, envisioning a world free from asthma-related suffering.
Asthma Society’s 50th Anniversary
The organisation celebrates its 50th anniversary this year with a mission to prevent asthma-related deaths in Ireland, encapsulated in their motto, ‘We’ll breathe easy when you can.’
Asthma Prevalence
In Ireland, over 380,000 individuals, or 1 in 13 people, live with asthma, making it the 4th highest prevalence in the world. Alarmingly, every four minutes, someone in Ireland visits an Emergency Department due to asthma, resulting in one asthma-related death every six days. Asthma-related deaths are preventable, and the society’s objective is to eliminate them by 2030.
Services
The charity operates an advice line for asthma sufferers, their families, healthcare professionals, and the public. Queries are triaged, and callers receive a callback from a specialist respiratory nurse or physiotherapist for up to 30 minutes. They also provide a WhatsApp nurse messaging service, both focusing on education and asthma management.
Educational Resources
The charity distributes resources, including the ‘5-Step Rule to Manage an Attack,’ information books on asthma, and inhaler medication posters, to GP practices, respiratory departments, nurse practitioners, physiotherapists, and respiratory physiologists. They also conduct Asthma Safe School Programs in schools across the country.
The Grant
The grant awarded will allow the charity to maintain the provision of over 20,000 resources annually, including self-management resources, their advice line, and WhatsApp service. These resources benefit those with asthma and the healthcare professionals who care for them.
