Kiyan’s Elective Journey in Uganda

Infectious Diseases & Emergency Medicine in Mulago Hospital

Experiences and Benefits

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Hospital Saturday Fund for the £800 grant that made my medical elective at Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, possible. The experience was truly life-changing and has had a profound impact on my medical education and future career.

At Mulago Hospital, I spent two weeks in the Infectious Diseases (ID) department and another two weeks in the Emergency Department (ED). In the ID department, I was deeply involved in diagnosing and treating a variety of infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. Seeing these conditions firsthand, especially in a setting where they are so prevalent, was eye-opening and invaluable. The hands-on experience I gained in managing these diseases is something I could never have gotten from textbooks alone.

The time I spent in the Emergency Department was equally transformative. The ED at Mulago is a fast-paced and often overwhelming environment, but it was incredibly rewarding. I assisted in triaging patients, performed basic emergency procedures, and helped manage acute medical and trauma cases. This experience pushed me to think quickly and act decisively, skills that are crucial for any aspiring doctor.

Interacting with a diverse patient population in both departments was one of the most enriching parts of my elective. I learned a lot about different cultural approaches to healthcare, which has made me a better communicator and more empathetic practitioner. Working alongside local medical professionals also gave me a deeper understanding of the healthcare challenges in resource-limited settings.

The £800 grant was a huge help in covering my travel, accommodation, and daily living expenses. This financial support meant that I could focus entirely on learning and making the most of this opportunity without worrying about the costs.

This elective has not only expanded my medical knowledge but also inspired me to pursue excellence in my future career. I am incredibly grateful to the Hospital Saturday Fund for their generosity and support. Thank you for making this unforgettable experience possible.
