Polio Survivors Ireland: Giving People The Help They Deserve
Polio Survivors Ireland was set up in 1993 as the Post-Polio Support Group by polio survivors who were experiencing the Late Effects of Polio (Post-Polio Syndrome). They are member led and polio survivors are central to their work.
Polio Survivors: Improving Living Standards
Polio Survivors Ireland have a membership of 970 people, most of whom contracted polio in early life. As a result of years of hospitalisation, many received little education which greatly affected their career prospects.
Later in life, as their health conditions progressed, many retired early. It’s estimated that 96% of Polio Survivors Ireland members depend on social welfare/pension payments for their entire income. While some extra payments are made to their members, unfortunately, these payments do not offset the cost of their medical conditions.
Enjoying The Warm Winter: The €13,500 Grant
The Hospital Saturday Fund presented a grant of €13,500 to Polio Survivors Ireland. This grant will go towards the Winter Heating Grant for Polio Survivors, in assistance towards heating bills.
Bringing Warmth: Fighting The Harsh Winter
The Winter Heating Grant of €13,500 helps 300 polio survivors. However, if Polio Survivors receive extra funding they would be able to help another 108 polio survivors stay warm.
The grant of €125 will provide some much-needed financial relief to Polio Survivors Ireland Members. This grant will help towards covering the cost of heating, especially during bad weather conditions.
