BCR: A Cancer Research Charity
Breakthrough Cancer Research (BCR) is a Cork based Irish cancer research Charity working to significantly improve the number of people who can survive this all too common disease. It is BCR’s aim to make electrochemotherapy available throughout the UK and Ireland, speeding up the adoption of this service everywhere.
Cancer Treatment: Electrochemotherapy
Electrochemotherapy is a treatment (ECT) for skin cancer and involves chemotherapy drugs being injected directly into cancer cells. A special probe is introduced to the skin to send an electric pulse into the tumour, which changes the composition of the cancer cell, allowing the chemotherapy to enter the cell more efficiently.
This method of treatment is preferred by both patients and clinicians and is available in some hospitals in the UK. However, in Ireland there is only one clinician who can administer electrochemotherapy.
Making ECT Accessible: The €13,500 Grant
To make ECT available for patients for Ireland’s national health service, a Health Technology Assessment is required to provide an economic evaluation and it is the funding for this assessment that BCR has specifically applied for.
This is the third application from BCR to The Hospital Saturday Fund. In total The Hospital Saturday Fund has awarded €6,000 (€3,000 in 2020 and €3,000 in January 2022). The total grant amount will support nutrition-based projects for those suffering from cancer.
Fighting Cancer Together: The Hospital Saturday Fund Supports BCR
BCR were pleased to announce that the full grant of €13,500 requested has been provided. This grant aims to assist BCR in reaching its goal of making cancer treatment accessible nationwide.
