In a recent meeting on July 19th, 2023, Margaret Rogers, GMC Member of The Hospital Saturday Fund, sat down with Richard Carson, the visionary CEO of ACET (Aids Care, Education and Training), to explore and support their ground-breaking initiative.
The Birth of Innovation
ACET, in collaboration with The Rainbow Clinic and Chiva, is spearheading the first non-medical social support project for children, young people, and young adults living with HIV in Ireland. This revolutionary facility, inspired by the successful Chiva model in the UK, is a pioneering venture in Ireland’s healthcare landscape.
Chiva’s Impact and ACET’s Aspiration
Richard shared insights into Chiva’s impactful work, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to ensuring that young people living with HIV receive comprehensive treatment, care, knowledge, and support to live fulfilling lives. ACET aims to replicate this success locally, bridging the gap left by Chiva’s UK base.
Overcoming Challenges and Expanding Horizons
Acknowledging the hurdles posed by post-Brexit visa restrictions, ACET is determined to establish residential activities and camps within Ireland. These initiatives aim to create a safe space for young people living with HIV, fostering connections, and addressing issues of stigma, health, and self-esteem.
Navigating Geographical Limitations
In a bid to overcome geographical constraints, ACET plans to offer one-to-one supports for young people and their families, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity across the country.
The Funding Journey
Margaret Rogers revealed that The Hospital Saturday Fund has already awarded ACET with a generous €4,500.00 grant towards local support. To further bolster their efforts, ACET is actively seeking additional funding through partnerships with the Health Service Executive, pharmaceutical companies, and corporate donations.
Expressing empathy for families coping with the challenges of HIV, Margaret Rogers is recommending a larger grant to support ACET’s mission of providing a safe and empowering environment for young people to thrive.
ACET’s journey is an inspiring testament to the power of innovation and collaboration in addressing critical health and psychosocial needs. As The Hospital Saturday Fund continues to champion impactful initiatives, your ongoing support plays a crucial role in shaping healthier, happier futures for those in need.
Stay tuned for more updates on ACET’s transformative journey!
